A short lesson on Down Syndrome

Down syndrome also known as trisomy 21 which is a genetic disorder caused when abnormal cell division results in an extra full or partial copy of chromosome 21. This extra genetic material causes the developmental changes and physical features of Down syndrome.

It is the most common genetic chromosomal disorder and the biggest cause of learning disabilities in children. It also causes other medical abnormalities, including heart and gastrointestinal disorders.Every year between 23,000 and 29,000 children are born in India with Down Syndrome, which is the highest in the world. But the survival rate is only 44 % for those who have a congenital heart disease.
